If you talk to most people about Direct3D 10 in a gaming context on the PC, their first response will most likely be 'Crysis'. This much-aniticpated title from Crytek, the people who brought us Far Cry, has become something of a poster boy for next-generation titles on the PC. But will we be seeing Crysis on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3? Not a chance says senior developer at Crytek, Bernd Diemer.

[quote]Although Crysis will support both current and the next version of DirectX, Crytek claims that only DirectX 10 allows the game to run as it was intended by the developers because the next-generation DirectX API, which will ship along with Windows Vista, allows more effects and more objects to be drawn on the screen with a smaller computational cost for the hardware.

Diemer explained that “next generation consoles like the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 do not offer the sufficient powerâ€Â

What a goddamn joke.

Somebody do me a favour and remind me to email this guy in five years when significantly better looking games than Crysis are running just fine on the X360/PS3.

What he means to say is I have neither the resources or inclination to port Crysis with an acceptable level of performance.

Clown.

This is kinda funny. If you take apart the XBox360 you basically have a motherboard CPU and a R520 graphics card? The author says, "Next gen consoles do not offer the sufficient power"...

Well Duuuuuuuuuuuhhh! You need a Dual GPU setup just to run the game at acceptable frame rates. The CES showing of Cyrsis was on a Crossfire setup and it was still looking like it was suffering from low rates.

Hmmm... A $2000.00 PC vs a $299.99 console. lol!

Doesn't matter because if EA does buy Crytek then their games will turn to shit just like everything EA buys up. Heh.

Crytek is a for-profit game company.

Yes it was running slow at E3, but by the time it ships... Crysis will end up running just fine on mid-range hardware providing you dial back the resolution and turn some bells and whistles off. (Like every other new game.)

For gaming applications only, both the X360 and PS3 are roughly comparable to a ~7900GT level video card, mated to a high-end CPU (and even more so in cell's case).

If Half Life 2 could be ported largely in tact to the original Xbox... I assure you Crysis can (and the funny thing is... probably WILL) be ported
to the PS3 or X360.

That's true, but for Crysis, isn't the "bells and whistles" what everyone wants from this game? Shooting trees and the destructive environment I can see a huge difference from the mid to high-end when this title gets released IMO.

Actually it probably is more like, "Our agreement with Microsoft forces us to keep the Vista version better looking than all the others. And they were emphatic about limiting the exposure in other markets until Vista gets a good toe hold."

The GPU is closer to R600 and not R520.

Alright, I'll bite.

Of course a $300 device is always going to be beneath a $1000 device in pure hardware terms... but you might also want to consider the fact that a good 80% of the greatest games ever made are only available on consoles.

If you dont like Zelda, Mario, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Resident Evil, God of War, Burnout etc... then I guess you're golden.

:soapbox:

Nope. As I've played them all and they're average at best. Good for the ADD/ADHD crowd though.
