Hanners has posted a news article.

It was bound to happen sooner rather than later, but it seems as though we might just be on the cusp of a new generation of games consoles...

Should be interesting to see if the average future PC is going to be any better than the consoles as far as graphics prowess is concerned. It will be up to the devs I suppose.

One ring to rule them all!

Doesn't this typically follow the pattern of console has something bitching and new and very powerful for the price versus PC, then 12 months later, it's crap compared to what's out in PC's, but the console doesn't get a refresh, it just stays terrible for several years?

Consoles like Wii that choose deliberately to provide a legacy experience aside, of course.

That's true. However it has become a consoles world in the last few years. I don't see the trend reversing itself. Like I said it's going to be the game companies that decide the fate of the gaming PC.

In other words, if they cater strictly to the console what reason would you have to upgrade your PC? Certainly not for games. On the other hand, you could use a 10 year old computer to play your games rather than picking up a shiny new console. Unless they create some new tech that is required for you to play a game (hardware T&L) <----killer app right? New card/system required.

I know I'm a little pessimistic. But you can't blame me since everything after 2007 (Crysis) has really been weaksauce.

Now let´s bet about the names.

I would think Xbox 1080 would make much more sense than the expected Xbox 720 name... I mean people should expect every game to be native 1080p and 720 would sound confusing :)

Playstation will not be Playstation 4 either. Judging by their recent "Vita" move, they are going to call it something lame...

Both. Of course there are exceptions. Thus far though, I have yet to see much innovation in the graphics dept. from devs. Tessellation was poorly implemented or not at all (Dirt 2, Dragon Age 2) where it really matters in most games that dared to code for it.

I don't.

Well, I would say you can expect it but.... Just give me your $60.00 and we my fix it with a patch after the beta test. Which is scheduled to begin on release day.

I know the lamest possible name for new playstation. For psp they went with VITA... possibly short for vitality or something like that. What could be more lame? Something about love... but shorter...

"PLAYSTATION LUV" COMING FOR HOLIDAY 2012. It´s happening, I´m sure of it! Because they looooooove games and entertainment and stuff. No... wait, there must be special scandinavian characters! "PLAYSTATION LÖV" it is.

I think given the Microsoft's reasoning for the name "Xbox 360" (they claim that they named the console that because of the 360 degrees of entertainment that it covers), "Xbox 360 2" might be a better name. Or taking a page out of Nintendo's book and name it something different (though given Xbox's brand recognition scrapping that name all together is probably not on the table).

Speaking of the fourth Playstation not being called the "Playstation 4", you might be right. I read somewhere (can't find the exact article now) that the number four in Japan is superstitious, similar to the number thirteen in America. So the speculation was that Sony may want to consider calling it something else, at least in Japan if not elsewhere.

Also, I like how we're apparently still PC-centric enough as a forum to be more worried about the names more than anything else. :P

It seems fair to expect a decent level of DirectX 11 performance from both Microsoft and Sony, I'm not sure they'll do much to stretch beyond that . Much like the current generation of consoles, the really interesting questions come on the CPU side of things for me...

I think the most interesting part will be the OSes, personally. The 360 and the PS3's processors were so atypical that they were really hardly ever pushed to within a modicum of their capability, except in very very rare cases like GT5 (which, non-surprisingly, spent 5+ years in development.) I bet Sony's gonna go with massively parallel ARM x64 and Android. The potential will be awesome.

That being said, if every fucking game isn't rendered in 1080p, well, then LOL. That's right, L O FUCKING L. Today's consoles are to rendering games what Vespas are to 8 lane highways.

No way will they want to use Android, far too much chance of people hacking the console in that scenario. As always, Sony will want everything locked down to a ridiculous degree.
