digitalwanderer has posted a news article.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not really into consoles, but this upcoming $99 Android based one has got me a bit excited!  I like the idea of an open platform for a console, plus all the other things it'll be capable of doing.  Check this bit out:

I just visited Elitebastards front page. Saw this big HACKERS WELCOME headline, and was like :scratchhead:

If nothing else I can promise it'll get more lively at least, right? Am I right? Huh? ;)

Just remember that "open" is a relative term.

Android is probably the least "open" of "open source" operating systems.

Also, you can (and have been able to for years) already turn any phone w/ MHL into a "console" with a couple of PS3 controllers (bluetooth) and an MHL HDMI out cable/adapter.

Things just got more interesting...

Quote:
Ouya's latest project update clues in backers on the console's ability to stream and play PC games remotely ... via established streaming service OnLive. Ouya took to its Kickstarter project page with an update detailing the partnership and showing off the full controller seen above.

lol - have already on-lived to a projector over MHL from a phone, too. Welcome to 2010?

OnLive is great for video streaming - sucks for noncasual gaming.

So then they should get a console AND a phone?

...

Why not get one thing that does both?

Cost of cheap smart phone without contract: $100
Cost of Ouya (theoretically): $100
Total Cost: $200

Cost of expensive smart phone without contract: $500
Total Cost: $500

I wonder...

I'm not planning on getting rid of my current Android phone for awhile. Plus what Dingo said.

Conversely, make sure your existing one does/doesn't support mhl. It's not unheard of. You may not have to have to shell out another $100 for the same thing you already have, AND you'd always have it with you instead of it being tethered to your TV AND it'll have it's own dedicated internet connection.
