Hanners has posted a news article.

It's time for this week's retro review, and today Layden has taken a look at Commodore 64 game Law of the West.

Just wanted to note that this is an interesting series.

There's a lot of retro review stuff out there in the net and still, so far I think I can't seem to remember seeing these games reviewed elsewhere and I can only barely remember any of them myself.

For this one I barely remember playing it, not understanding any of the dialogue, and singing some kind of law of the west song :)

I remember Law of the West quite well, it was the third Accolade release in the UK (on the US Gold label) and while it received a fairly lukewarm response in it's reviews (at least it did in Zzap 64), i quite enjoyed it. It did, however, have a couple of serious flaws. Because floppy drives were expensive and not very common in the UK, the game was released on cassette and resulted in huge loading times (not a rareity for C64 games, even with fast loader systems like NovaLoad which i think this game used). This wasn't the biggest problem though. That was easily the "small" flaw that you could only play the game once. If you wanted to play again, you had to reset the computer and load the whole game again!

Yes indeed, I had it on tape, in a compilation with Hardball and Psi 5 Trading Company. The multiload for LOTW wasn't too bad, especially compared to Psi 5. I thought Psi 5 was a better game, but it was totally ruined by the loooooong cassette multiload. :(

Having to reset was annoying, but I think in a strange way it helped the game's lastability. If you could just replay the game instantly, then you'd probably get bored of it really quickly. Obviously, that's not really an excuse for iffy game design.

Yeah totally agree, PSI 5 was great game, ruined by monumentally long loading times. The game was pretty tough and because of those long loading times, i never really got enough practice to be any good at it. I'd have to say that of the three Accolade titles, Hardball was probably the best (this coming from someone who finds baseball coma-inducing) and the animation on the pitcher was simply jaw dropping back then... so typically it was the only Accolade game i didn't have.
